We see our architectural practice as a negotiation between the requirements of a project, and a minimalism that consumes as little of the planet as possible. The most sustainable building is often the one that’s still standing, we just need to understand these places differently and intensely. We ask; how small a house? how little might we need to do, for what we need? We believe that the largest of ideas are often found in the smallest of spaces, and architecture helps find those moments.
Chris Tucker founded herd architects in 1996, with around 300 projects constructed over that time. Chris has been awarded regional, state and international prizes for architecture, and been involved in over 50 exhibitions locally and internationally.
Working between practice and research, his M.Phil (2010) was a study of the street using visual algorithms and image segmentation, while his Phd (2017) was a theoretical, critical and practice based study of the sites of urban vague - the privileged, bored and leftover surfaces of cities that might become occupied by houses and other public uses. Interested broadly in social justice, diversity and the politics of public space, Chris also runs architectural studio’s with Tangentyere Council in the Town Camps of Alice Springs (since 2017) and Tokyo (since 2019).
Academic role at UON
Chris is also employed by the University of Newcastle (UON), and the work of Herd Architects is unrelated to his role at the University of Newcastle.
